Cabo Verde: Discovering Fogo

On a friend's recommendation, we had selected La Fora Ecolodge as our base of operations in Fogo and we weren't disappointed. Guests have cozy private bungalows with comfortable beds, private bathrooms and a wrap-around porch, and can enjoy well furnished common areas any time of day. Arriving very early, we selected our dinner option (what a surprise - vegetables! and rice!) and settled in to read and enjoy the scenery while they got our rooms ready. After unpacking we cobbled together lunch from the excellent bar menu.     Having planned itas a lazy day, we didn't have a lot to occupy our time beyond resting, reading and taking a walk. We enjoyed wandering up the cobbled road, spotting birds and some curious goats, taking in a view of the mountain. Returning before sunset, we sat at a cozy, candlelit table to enjoy the heaping servings provided. Cabo Verde: Praia - Part One

Evening flights followed by early morning island hopping doesn't leave much time to explore, but a girl's gotta eat! First we wandered across the road, past beautiful street art, to check out the options at the local. They were able to acccomodate vegetarians if we would settle for vegetable and rice (this would become a theme for us), so we decided to explore other options. A quick internet search located an Italian place about a 20 minute walk away, so we set off down the hill. After a  quick stop at a bakery for Portuguese sweet buns and juice for tomorrow's 5 a.m. start, we continued down the roads - enjoying the sidewalks and streetlights that are few and far between in Senegal - only to discover it the restaurant closed earlier than their posted hours. Resigned to veggies and rice, we turned around. On the way down we had noticed a lively-looking spot for a drink, so halfway back up the hill - tummies grumbling - we decided to see whether they had any options for us. ...
